Scorpio Full Moon Lunar Eclipse ~ May 5, 2023

Theme: Emotional Turbulence

By Andrea Dupuis

Scorpio is a yin sign, watery in nature yet more like a raging river with a sheet of ice over top – all looks calm on the surface, but underneath there’s big emotions and movement.

This week we may find ourselves needing to let the water out, to crack the surface and feel anything we’ve not been feeling. These can be both light and dark emotions. Ride the waves friends.

We may feel ourselves swimming in deeper waters emotionally this week as we come to the final eclipse of this eclipse season.

The energy around eclipses is very unstable, and it’s not the most ideal time to make commitments, sign contracts or to make firm plans. It’s not advisable to travel on eclipses – as it can lead to delays and issues with travel, but overall trust your own intuition and do what’s best for you.

Keep your options open, ride the waves and stay flexible mentally and emotionally. Eclipses are a time of great change. Of endings and beginnings. You may find you feel one way, and a few days after the eclipse, you can feel a completely different way!

This powerful portal isn’t to be underestimated. In my view, eclipses are the most powerful cosmic event we experience. Download our Free Eclipse Survival Guide to Discover How to Make the Most Out of Eclipse Season.

With an eclipse in Scorpio we are being asked to dip into the underworld – this can mean we may experience more intense emotions such as depression, sadness, moodiness and general malaise. This will be most prominent for Scorpio, Taurus, Cancer and Leo – Sun Moon or Rising.

For some, depending on your planets and placements – the overwhelm of emotions can be with positive emotions. Either way, welcome all emotions this week.

It reminds me of the beautiful Rumi poem:

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

The highest exemplification of Scorpio is as the Grand Alchemist – Scorpio is never afraid to dive deep into the emotional depths and alchemize that pain into gold.

Don’t be afraid to dive into your emotional depths right now. Once the eclipse has passed, you can come out anew –  transformed, fresh, this process of death and rebirth can occur this week.

The eclipse is also in a close opposition to Uranus – this creates a push-pull dynamic and tension between themes of the planets – and adds more intensity to the eclipse. Uranus brings wild and unexpected changes into our lives, it comes to shake things up.

This week: rest, relax, go easy. Be careful around the eclipses, pay close attention to your thoughts. In ancient astrology they warned to watch your thoughts during eclipse time as they could stick long term. Don’t take big risks. It’s a deeply spiritual time to contemplate your life, journal, pull cards, be in ceremony, sleep… Dream worlds can be wild! The veil is thin.

Some say not to do any typical full moon rituals around the eclipses, but again trust yourself and most of all – take it easy.

Mediate, go deep into yourself. Cocoon, rest, go slow. Honour your feelings. You will come out the other side brighter.

Who this Eclipse impacts the most:

Scorpio Sun, Moon, Rising*
Taurus Sun, Moon, Rising*
Cancer Sun, Moon, Rising
Leo Sun, Moon, Rising
Aquarius Sun, Moon, Rising

*These two will feel the impacts the most.

Eclipse Journaling Contemplations:

What needs to metaphorically die in your life? It can be patterns, relationships, old ways of being.

What’s ready to be birthed? What are you clinging to? Where are you not willing to make room for the new?

The deeper we can go into ourselves, the lighter we will come out.

This eclipse is also in opposition to Mercury Retrograde in Taurus. Here’s some info about the retrograde and how it may impact you…

Mercury Retrograde:

When a planet goes retrograde it means it stops moving forward and appears to be going backward. We feel the effects of retrogrades differently depending on our own personal chart placements.

Retrograde effects aren’t the same across the board, though similar themes will be experienced for all of us. You may have noticed we don’t all experience Mercury Retrograde – the most common, occurring three times per year – in the same way.

While some of us experience issues with communication and technology, many of us find it a very enjoyable time with enhanced communication and lightness! How you’re impacted depends on your personal planetary configurations. We are not all the same in how we experience big planetary transits.

Retrograde planets are unpredictable. It’s hard to predict what the outcomes will be with so many in retrograde. There’s no hard and fast rules or agreement among astrologers what retrograde planets mean. There’s a lot of variance in viewpoints across systems.

In Vedic astrology, when the malefics go retrograde (Saturn, Mars and Pluto – in modern astrology) the effects are less harsh. When the benefics, Jupiter and Venus, go retrograde their effects are less helpful and positive. In western astrology, retrogrades are seen as time when things slow down and are needing to be revised.

I’ve found there’s 4 ways retrograde planets play out for us:

  • The energy of the planet is amplified, we feel it’s effects 10 fold
  • The energy of the planet is internalized, we are more internally focused on the themes the planet represents
  • The energy of the planet is stuck and nothing seems to move forward
  • The past returns, people, contracts, issues, all come up for re-evaluation

We could experience a combination of all four during a retrograde period as well! The key is to observe how the planet operates for you in your own life. For example, if you were born with Venus retrograde in your birth chart, this Venus Rx could be a very fruitful time. You could feel fabulous! However if you were born with an exalted Venus in Pisces, the energy would feel very challenging.

One thing for sure, the planets are not operating in their natural forward way so it’s a time of great change and unpredictability.

Feel into how you’re uniquely impacted and take note for future retrogrades. Empower yourself by understanding your own chart and how the planets operate in it…
