New Moon in Leo and Lion’s Gate Portal ~ August 8, 2021 @ 9:50am ET/6:50am PT ~ Theme: Spiritual Spark

By Andrea Dupuis

This week we welcome a New Moon in the sign of Leo a few days before the fixed star Sirius turns visible again and can be seen on the eastern horizon before dawn. The reappearance of Sirius is also known as the ‘Lion’s Gate Portal’ an annual event with important spiritual and personal significance.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. It means “Glowing” in Greek.  Sirius is also known as one of the most spiritual stars, bringing a divine spark with it when it’s visible again. This Lion’s Gate portal runs from July 28 through to August 12. The 8th is considered the most powerful day because of it’s connection to numerology and it’s the day Sirius aligns with the Sun. Even though Sirius doesn’t officially become visible until August 11th.

Sirius was an important star to ancient Egyptians. When it became visible again every year around the same time, it indicated a flooding of the Nile. This was a powerful time for those living near there as farming season would begin again and the soil would become fertile again. It was considered a blessed time!

In modern days, this time can be used to turbo charge our manifestations and set intentions. We can feel the soil of life is more fertile and possible. It’s a unique opportunity this month as it coincides with the New Moon in Leo on August 8th especially in the area of our charts where Leo is.

This New Moon is also in a tense Square aspect to Uranus, the planet of change, rebellion, upheaval and unexpected events. We may have many unexpected events occur around this New Moon, expect the unexpected!

It’s a very fiery time overall, so be careful of the shadow Leo traits – arrogance, high temper, aggression.

Each of us has Leo ruling an area of our chart no matter if we have planets there or not. Leo is considered the King of the zodiac (as it’s ruled by The Sun, the most powerful life-giving planet, that which everything else revolves), and like any good king or queen we can use our power for good or evil.

To see where Leo rules for you check your rising sign below. The area is our King or Queen-dom.It’s the place in our charts where we are the most king or queen-like, where we can achieve high levels and where we can shine the brightest. It’s where we are a natural leader. It also shows the area we can exude the most power and grace… it’s where we can lead with the fierce yet gentle heart Leo is known for.

However as with all signs we have to be careful of the shadow side of the sign. Wherever it rules in our chart can also indicate where we can become prideful, arrogant and even aggressive in our pursuit of power.

The lesson of Leo is to ‘tame the inner lion’ , the part of us that wants to rule ruthlessness, and instead focus on compassion, grace and patience.

Leo is connected to the Strength card in tarot. In the image a woman with an infinity symbol above her crown pets a lion. She is using gentleness and sweetness to tame the wild beast. The infinity symbol above her head shows her connection to the divine.

New Moon’s are the best time to set intentions, so this week we have double the power to really steer the course of our next couple of months. For a special Lion’s Gate ritual see below.
