Subthemes for April 2024:

  1. Communicating honestly and releasing the past
  2. Using healthy anger as a catalyst for change
  3. Reassessing our beliefs and values

The month of April begins in medias res, a Latin expression that means “in the middle of things” —and refers to narratives that start at the height of the action. In this case, the story of April 2024 opens with us suspended in the liminal space between eclipses—irreversible events have been set in motion, and now the only choice is to follow through and see how it ends.

Over the next few weeks, situations will change quickly, events will gain momentum, and we may face the consequences of our actions.

Some of us will experience necessary endings, while others may receive a long-awaited breakthrough…

One thing is for sure, though—whatever is happening now has a fated quality.

Always a high-octane time, April is characterized by the fast-moving energy of the cardinal fire sign Aries—this is energy that pushes—pushes us to decide, to act, and to get out of our comfort zone. And it is even more intense this time around due to several highly significant transits set to unfold.

This is not a standard spring clean—but a complete overhaul.

Mercury retrograde in Aries

On April Fools Day, Mercury will station retrograde in Aries—proving that sometimes the universe does have a sense of humour. The planet of information and logic has been blazing a trail through the first sign of the zodiac since March 9, encouraging us to be bold, blunt, and honest in our interactions with others.

As it begins its backspin, challenging conversations from the last few weeks may come up for a second review. You may feel more impulsive, experience a desire to turn your thoughts into action or blurt out something you’ve been holding back.

On-brand with the overall vibe of the month, this retrograde cycle carries additional weight. Not only does it coincide with eclipse season, but we will see Mercury cross Chiron and the North Node three times.

The conjunctions with Chiron will activate wounds around independence and authenticity, while the connections with the North Node will bring information to light that sends us in new, more aligned directions. These events will allow us to resolve old wounds related to asserting ourselves and help us heal through honest communication.

Mercury retrogrades are associated with a return to the past, and this will be especially relevant when it makes a conjunction with Venus on April 19. Sometimes, just as we are about to level up, people or triggering situations return to test us— do not falter when this happens.

Your recent growth may feel threatening to people who are not where they want to be in life or are too afraid to take action toward their dreams. They may try to prevent you from moving forward by ridiculing your ideas or causing you to second-guess yourself. Tap into Aries’ courage to set healthy boundaries and maintain your resolve.

Mars conjunct Saturn in Pisces

On the heels of an explosive solar eclipse, we experience a full stop as Mars meets up with Saturn in Pisces on April 10. Saturn is the wet blanket of the zodiac and represents restriction and responsibility—when it gets in Mars’s way, our ability to take action becomes blocked, resulting in tension and frustration.

Saturn forces us to look at the bigger picture and make long-term plans—it also serves as a stark reminder that our decisions always affect others and that “following our bliss” has real-life consequences. This will be a test of strength and stamina—how badly do you want it, and what are you prepared to do to get it?

Mars in Pisces also struggles to express anger. For most of us, anger carries negative connotations and is considered a weakness; however, when handled correctly, anger can be a helpful emotion as it draws our attention to anything that has become oppressive, threatens our will, or violates our values and beliefs.

If we have found ourselves in an unjust or unhealthy situation, anger can give us the strength to leave; if we have allowed others to walk all over us, anger can provide us with the power to speak honestly and set boundaries. Ultimately, healthy anger helps us identify where we are betraying ourselves and can lead to necessary change.

During this time, we may feel much less tolerant of obstacles standing between us and what we want, so navigate this transit carefully to avoid regret later.

Jupiter conjunct Uranus in Taurus

On April 20, we experience one of the most significant astrological transits of the year: the meeting of Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus. The great benefic only joins the planet of revolution once every 14 years, and we haven’t seen these two planets meet in this sign since 1941. This energy will likely be more noticeable on a collective level and auger expansive and shocking developments related to finances, the environment, and technology. Generally speaking, this conjunction is a positive one that results in innovation and great leaps forward.

On an individual level, we may experience this energy as a need to reevaluate and expand our belief system to incorporate new information. Taurus’s shadow manifests as stubbornness and sticking with something out of comfort or convenience.

Our long-held beliefs may be called into question now as we are presented with shocking or contradictory information. Remember, truth is subjective—as much as we need a personal philosophy to live by, we must not stick to it so stringently that we put ourselves in a box. A radical life requires radical thinking.

Overall, the energy this month may feel quite exhausting for many…

The emphasis on honesty, confrontations with the past, and a persistent desire for change will make it difficult to ignore what isn’t working and remain satisfied with what was previously “good enough.”

This doesn’t have to be negative, though. The universe is busting open the door to a new paradigm, and it’s up to us to decide whether we will boldly cross the threshold or watch as the opportunity slips through our fingers.
