Virgo New Moon

September 14, 2023

Theme: Practice Devotion

By Andrea Dupuis

It’s almost autumn here in the northern hemisphere, summer is coming to a close, and the intense yang energy of summer starts moving into the earthy and yin sign of Virgo. It’s time to focus our lives back to the regular routine and to start enjoying the simple and pure pleasures of fall…

Mythologically the sign of Virgo it’s connected to the goddess Detemer, the Greek Goddess of the harvest. In almost every ancient culture, Virgo is represented as a woman holding a Wheat Shaft – a sign of harvest and fertility. It’s a symbol of both because in the Northern Hemisphere Virgo season occurs in the Fall (harvest), and in the Southern, it’s Spring (fertility).

Alongside this New Moon we also have 6 planets currently in retrograde (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Venus went direct on September 3) so there’s a major call to slow down, pause and take stock of what occurred over the spring and summer months.

Retrograde planets become more powerful and amplified, and during these retrogrades we can get a lot done and make progress in our lives… the planets appear closer to the earth and appear standing still. This amplification of the planet’s energy can feel intense and for many very overwhelming.

However it can feel like nothing is moving forward swiftly and we’re walking through mud. We can feel like our lives are stuck and nothing is moving forward even though we are putting in big effort. We may wonder if we’ll ever see results.

For example, if we have a business, we can feel like we work-work-work and yet don’t seem to reap the reward. The rewards of the hard retrograde work comes when the planets move direct (depending on our own personal chart). Nothing in astrology can be generalised, we all feel the impacts of a planetary transit differently. It’s best to learn your own chart. Click here to learn how to read your own chart.

Overall, the lesson of retrogrades is to practice DEVOTION. The intensity asks us to surrender our ideas of how things should look, relax and let go. We are so used to a world that’s go-go-go. Retrograde planets ask us to slow down, take it easy and let life lead.

There’s no more powerful sign to have a New Moon in than Virgo to really have us look deeper at what we’re devoted to.

The constellation of Virgo is one of the most misunderstood of the 12 zodiac signs. Most people think of Virgo as a detailed, type-A, uptight, clean and pure sign – and many of those traits are Virgoian.

However, Virgo energy is so much more than that. It’s one of the most spiritually insightful and underrated feminine signs in the zodiac. The commitment to details and to ‘rightness’ is because Virgo is the most devotional sign in the zodiac.

When they have a mission, a business, or a love – Virgo’s will persist .On some level they express their devotion to the divine through their devotion to perfection. We can all use a little bit of this energy right now. Here’s some questions to ponder during this New Moon:

  • What am I devoted to? Is it a Mission? Cause? Relationship? Business? Family? Spiritual matter?
  •  Am I willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of this person, business, relationship etc?
  • How can I better express my devotion through my actions?

Devotion is a layer deeper than commitment to something. It means we commit so deep we don’t waver, we make sacrifices for it and we live in alignment with it. Devotion is commitment in action.

Virgo is one of the many feminine archetypes within all of us – she is represented by the Hermit card in the Tarot. The Hermit is the part of us that indicates reflection, introspection and spiritual insight. The part of us that is whole on our own and deeply connected to the divine.

It is a card of deep devotion to the divine through releasing all worldly pleasures.

Virgo is also connected to the symbol of a Virgin. One of the reasons Virgins are seen as so metaphorically ‘pure’ is because they have yet to be tainted by the lure of lust and sexual gratification.

They are able to still see and think clearly from a spiritual perspective because of their devotion to God. Many who go celibate say the same thing, without sex around them they are able to see life clearer and connect deeper to the spiritual realms. This idea connects back to the Hermit Card.

In Greek translations, the word virgin meant “one unto herself.” The woman in all of us who is chaste, who sees clearly and has deep sacred insight and vision.

Let the sacred part of you come to the forefront and bear spiritual insight. Practice purification rituals such as cleanses, clean your home, sort out your paperwork.

Virgo Devotion Practice

This is a practice in self trust and knowledge. Most often we have the deepest wisdom about ourselves and our lives even though we go to others for the answers and advice. This practice helps us deeply attune to our own inner wisdom and voice.

  • Set a beautiful space for yourself with candles, flowers, set up in a sacred and quiet space.
  • Sit quietly in meditation for 5-10 minutes, clear your mind. You can use music here or not. It can be helpful to use beta waves or calming music.
  • Take out a journal and get ready to write
  • Ask yourself the below questions, close your eyes and when you’re ready free write the answers.
  • It can feel hard at first to not interject with your mind and let it take over, let the writing come out in a stream of consciousness and don’t stop the flow.
  • Write, write and write!
  • When you are done look back on what you’ve written, read it to yourself and pull out the gems.

Remember that devotion takes sacrifice, we must be willing to take actions aligned with how important it is to us.

    • What is causing me to struggle right now?
    • Am I really devoted to this person? Mission? Business? Friendship? Relationship? God? My health?
    • Am I willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of this person, business, relationship etc?
    • What does my devotion look like in action?
    • How can I better express my devotion to this matter?
