On December 12, we have an adventurous new moon in Sagittarius. This lunation will occur in the constellation Ara—Latin for “altar”—highlighting themes of sacrifice, responsibility, and the burdens we must relinquish before taking action.

New moons are typically associated with beginnings, but they don’t always guarantee a fresh start. Sometimes, they indicate a necessary pause and period of preparation.

Waiting is foreign to Sagittarius, who prefers to leap first and ask questions later. “I’ll figure it out when I get there,” said every Sagittarius booking a last-minute vacation.

When the moon lands in this sign, we may feel a need for expansion and wish we could do something different, only to realize these impulses are at odds with the reality of our day-to-day lives.

Our desire for freedom then becomes overshadowed by the burden of responsibility, making it challenging to take action.

To temper these conflicting energies and take the leap presented by this new moon, we must be more intentional about how we spend our time. This is easier said than done if we insist on doing everything ourselves.

If we were let down in the past, our needs weren’t met, or we experienced impatience or dismissal when we asked for help, it can be difficult to delegate, and we may think self-abandonment is the only way to earn love.

When we struggle to say no to others and yes to ourselves, the burdens (and resentments) pile up quickly. When taken to extremes, attachment or over identification with our responsibilities becomes an excuse or crutch that holds us back.

This inevitably provides a false sense of security and accomplishment. We may not be doing what we want, but we feel useful.

When we are accustomed to being responsible for everyone and taking care of everything, following our hearts can feel foreign and frightening. We may daydream about the things we most desire to cope with the drudgery of our obligations, but when it comes to taking steps toward that vision, we freeze because it feels selfish and impractical.

In Paulo Coelho’s parable, The Alchemist, Santiago meets a shop owner who dreams of travelling to Mecca. When Santiago asks the man why he doesn’t just go, the merchant replies, “It’s the thought of Mecca that keeps me alive. That’s what helps me face these days that are all the same … I’m afraid that if my dream is realized, I’ll have no reason to go on living.”

Our wishes can become a coping mechanism, our to-do lists and commitments an excuse, and we run the risk of dreaming without ever doing.

But Sagittarius’ energy is impatient—it wants to do something yesterday.

So, the shadow side of this moon has the potential to incite fiery moments of rebellion. We may find ourselves engaging in reckless behaviour to escape perceived restrictions; however, any relief is likely to be short-lived and cause more harm than good.

Healthy commitments enrich our lives, and it would be unwise to abandon our responsibilities entirely. To make the most of this energy, consider how you are currently spending your time and what you can release to create space for your passions.

Delegation is an act of trust, essential in our close relationships. Allowing people to take responsibility for themselves and asking them to shoulder some of our burdens leads to empowerment on both sides.

Two weeks ago, the full moon in Gemini asked us to decide what we wanted. Now, the new moon in Sagittarius asks us to make room for it by delegating, setting boundaries, and releasing our fears.

Just as you have made sacrifices to fulfill other obligations, you must also make sacrifices to fulfill the desires of your heart.

Adventure awaits.

New Moon Ritual: Creating Space

The concept of the “miracle morning” has continued to grow in popularity over the years. More than a way to increase productivity, it is a devotional practice that teaches you to prioritize yourself. The key to any successful change is starting small—setting achievable goals and gradually expanding from there. If you are new to rising before the sun, try setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier each day, then begin building a routine that incorporates practices that resonate with you. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • 10 minutes of meditation
Listening to singing bowls, binaural beats, or guided meditations can prime your mind for creativity and receptiveness.
  • Daily tarot or oracle card pull
Pulling a card each morning helps you tune into your intuition.
  • Journal
Release any anxieties or worries by getting them out of your head and onto paper or create a gratitude list.
  • Read
Read a few pages of a self-development book or something related to your interests.
  • Move your body
Do an online yoga class or strength workout.
  • Set your intentions
What do you want to accomplish today? How do you want to show up for others? Write it down and commit to it.
  • Be gentle with yourself
Life happens and things do not always go as planned.
