New Moon in Capricorn Astrology Report for January 16, 2018 at 6:17pm PST
The New Moon in Capricorn initiates Eclipse Season, as the next two lunations will be a Total Lunar Eclipse and a Partial Solar Eclipse.
Eclipse Seasons are potent portals of change that occur approximately every six months. For many of us in the United States, the last eclipse season in August 2017 was incredibly memorable, as it brought the first Total Solar Eclipse visible in the US since 1979 (the next one occurs in 2024). Begin this eclipse season with a reflection: what happened in your life this past August? What changed? How has your course altered since then?
The word “eclipse” derives from the phrase, “I leave behind/ I abandon.”
On this New Moon, we are making preparations to leave something behind. The things we will abandon are weighing us down. They are standing in the way of our true purpose. What feels like it is heavy or holding you back? Is there pressure on yourself that can be relieved? What are you ready to discard so you can live in alignment? What stands between you and your integrity? Say a grateful goodbye. And in doing so, set the terms for what you are calling in for the next leg of your journey.
Choosing to abstain is not so much about depriving ourselves as it is fully aligning with our intention. We leave falsehood behind to anchor deeply into reality, and into what is most important. There is a phrase, “discipline is remembering what you want.” – David Campbell
This New Moon is a time to remember what we want, and pay homage to it.
Discipline does not have to be cold and hard. It can be compassionate, warm, and loving. It can be our ground and foundation. Discipline and healthy boundaries are some of the most pertinent forms of love.
Discipline is another word for committing to learning. “Disciple” is the root of “discipline,” it means a loyal and devoted follower. What guidelines are you observing this year? What are you committing to learning this year – and what actions will you take to absorb those lessons?
A disciple is a devotional student of the master. The master isn’t some hermit on the hill – it’s you. It is the wisdom that resides within your own bones. On this moon, let your elder self set your intentions. Be a student of and an adherent to the path to your genuine fulfillment.
In order to learn and make progress, we don’t have to force and pain ourselves into restriction or unrealistic goals. We aren’t required to limit or effort ourselves into submission. We do not have to bear unreasonable burden. Instead, we can simply and graciously adhere to that which matters most, and welcome the path meant for us based on what we’ve encountered so far, and where we long to go.
This moon guides us with a steady pace. This last couple of weeks, decisions have been made. Fears and delays have been faced and surpassed.
Layers of ancient ways of being and seeing have been shed. We have gotten to the bottom of influential entanglements and shined light on outworn dynamics. We’ve plumbed our depths and alchemically transformed poison into power. We have awakened further, reinventing what we know ourselves to be. We let go of who we were to embrace who we are meant to become.
Huddle close to your core purpose. Identify your original intent – the one that lies still beneath every desire for creation. Stay with it. Look towards those who have walked a similar path before you.
Whom do you admire, and why?
What achievements are you aiming for?
Who and what are you building with this one precious life?
It is time for ascent. During the last New Moon, we were gathering nourishment. On this New Moon, we are stepping firmly on the path of reality, standing at the base of the mountain path we were made for. This is the path of wisdom, of credibility, and of expertise. The road to Mastery. The Way of Good Work.
We can do hard things. We can stay the course and persevere. The path may be steep, but it is ours. Along the timeline of this journey, we meet things exactly as they are. We encounter precisely what we are meant to meet; nothing more, and nothing less.
Tie your shoes. Ration your supplies. Summon your strength and set your daily schedule. You’re in this hike for the long haul,
And the view is totally worth it.
In fact, it will satisfy your soul.

Aries: I commit to showing up for my long-term self and my wider role in the world.
Aries, this moon asks you to determine your purpose and your lasting goals – and stake a claim for them. You have the confidence, the passion, and the energy to chase and attain your ambitions. You’re a natural leader, meant to pioneer a charge. You have a strong mission. You excel at initiating, inspiring, getting things going. But for you, Aries, it can be a challenge to stay the course. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? What would you love to commit to in order to get there? Name your usual obstacles, and devise a plan to overcome them. Partnership and stable foundations could assist you in pursuing your full potential. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – Useful proverb of unbeknownst origins, often attributed to Africa
Taurus: I move beyond my comfort zone to expand my horizons.
Taurus, it is rather easy for you to get comfortable and stay with the familiar. This moon asks that you invest in experiences that help you to move beyond comfort and enter into the arena of growth. This could mean planning a trip to an undiscovered region, or committing to a path of education, learning, and gathering knowledge. To be more is to see more. How do you want to gain perspective this next year? What adventures await? Mind the phrase, “you can’t take it with you.” When our body completes its lifetime, the things we own and possess don’t come with us. But the immaterial experiences that enrich our lives spiritually stay with us for the duration. To infinity, and beyond!
Gemini: I release all thought and allow my purpose to emerge from my connection with something greater and more ultimate.
On this moon, Gemini, be curious about the subtle. The imperceptible. The unknowable and inarticulable. So often, the busy mind gets in our way. Posing as our ally, it clogs the space for our divine purpose to simply flow in and through. Quiet down. Enter the silence. Position yourself in relationship with spirit, with power, with ancestry and essence itself. Be still. Quell the movement and the fluctuations and empty yourself of everything. Become intimate with what is underneath. Go beyond the words and the thoughts to receive divine power. The emptiness is full. Your own soul communicates what it is you’re truly meant to be doing here. Receive that, be transformed by it, and allow your power to become manifest.
Cancer: I am guided to embrace deeper commitments in my most important relationships.
Not all relationships are created equal. Some are more substantial than others. Some are light, while others are long term. This moon encourages you, Cancer, to cultivate relationships of substance. The ones that hold and carry you through tough times. Those that help you to deepen yourself. Whether a relationship is just beginning or it has stood the test of time, this moon offers the change to reboot and re-define equitable terms. You are a natural nurturer – is there a way your primary relationships can become even more supportive? As always, the most important beloved to attend is yourself. On this moon, reform your boundaries and modify relational conditions to reflect increased respect for self and others.
Leo: I love rhythms; they increase my efficacy.
Leo! Chances are, you are working hard on this New Moon. Work hard so you can play hard. This moon offers a time to clear things out, to re-organize, to plan, and to restructure your daily rhythms. Diet, exercise, health, hygiene, and service are at the fore. Don’t get lost in the details, but do set yourself up for success so you can really shine in 2018. What are the most essential guidelines to focus on this year? Find the connection between discipline and pleasure. Sometimes what’s healthiest for us is simply what makes us feel the best in the long run. Fun, entertainment, and delight are essential nutrients for you. You may need to modify your schedule to reflect this. Carve out play times. Clean your inner and outer space. Re-organize your drawers and closets. Toss things that don’t make you happy. Set joyful goals with how you want food and exercise to unfold this year.
Virgo: I am perfectly creative, simply because I am.
You’re a humble one, Virgo, and that is a beautiful thing. But you can also be rather self-critical at times. This moon encourages you to embrace your creative self, regardless of how flawed or refined the things you make may seem to be. Not everyone believes they are creative, but the sheer nature of human life makes each person a creator. Your creative essence might not come through as a painting or a theater piece. Every meal you make is your creation. Every skill you hone can become a way to express yourself into the world. Every thought, every word, every deed, becomes your living story. Your lifestyle itself is an art. So approach your tasks with a light-heartedness that allows your love-light to flow through them. This is a romantic and confident moon for you. Reinforce your intentions with pride.
Libra: I lean into the support of stable foundations.
Home. Roots. Land. An anchor. Libra, it is time to welcome stability into your life. When we have a safe, secure foundation, it allows us to live from a place of peace. It also gives us the support we need so we can attain our longterm goals. Libra, this moon is about establishing home and belonging. This could mean actual literal, physical home. It could also mean the home within; our sense of security. How are you doing on the homefront? What intentions are you setting around stability this year? Note the state of things as it pertains to your family and your immediate environment. Perhaps these areas need some reconstruction. Let your intuition guide. Make necessary commitments. Identify your core needs and locate who can be counted on as a support system in your life.
Scorpio: I open myself to learning, sharing, and communicating with others.
You like your privacy. That’s great. Still waters run deep. But this is a social and intellectual moon for you, Scorpio. You are in a time of great motivation and expansion. It can feel raw and vulnerable to expose yourself, but you are encouraged at this time not to hide. Your innate magnetism is running high. Your power is expanded, and you’re being asked to use it to empower others. Be truthful. Shine light in the darkness. Perhaps you are taking up a new educational pursuit. Or maybe you’re attending a party or social event. It could be that you are asked to teach or speak on a topic you feel passionate about. Open yourself to being seen. Let your words, and the space in between the words, resonate as a transmission that transforms and benefits all who hear.
Sagittarius: I gather resources for the journey ahead.
In order to go where none have gone before, you’ve got to have sustenance in your bag. Food, physical and spiritual, that keeps you going. How are your resources doing, Sagittarius? A resource is anything we can subsist off of. The supplies that give us life. This moon asks you to take stock. Check your bank account. Set realistic financial goals and make a plan to attain them. Also, notice what you value the most. To value means to invest a sense of worthiness. What do you value the most? List your values stream of consciousness, and then go through and circle your top 20, top 10, and top 5. The values you identify today can help to guide your choices for the next year and lead you towards greater fulfillment.
Capricorn: I begin again, consistently gaining mastery over myself.
This is your New Moon, Capricorn. New Moons are for planting seeds of intention. With this lunation in your home sign, first reflect: who have you become? Is there anything about your sense of self or identity that needs tearing down and rebuilding? Because you are oriented towards goals, it is likely you have completed some worthwhile achievements in your life. Recognize that. Give credit where credit is due – to yourself! Nice work! These achievements are the foundation for what is to come next. Brick by brick and step by step, you will continue to build on what you have made so far. The mountain that awaits might be the most daunting yet. Rather than restrict yourself in fear, embrace full confidence. Become the master and the mountain itself. Trust – if you made it this far, you are thoroughly qualified to see your purpose through to completion.
Aquarius: I dream of something yet unseen, letting go to arrive where I need to be.
Let yourself rest, Aquarius. Become undone. Let loose. Imagine there’s no plan and no directive other than to flow and be rejuvenated. Play some dreamy music. Let your only goal this moon be unconditional love. Call in compassion for yourself. Treat yourself, others, and life, with acceptance, forgiveness, and gentleness. Gift help to society’s underdogs and artists. Search and soothe your soul. Hide out, hole up, meditate and retreat. This is a great time to lose yourself to empathy, inspiration, and creative projects.
Pisces: I am held by a team who ground me and offer me hope.
Pisces, this New Moon bodes well for creating new steadfast connections. Use your mystical intuition to guide you toward the bonds you are meant to solidify. Look for allies, colleagues, and community. Beyond best friends and lovers, the gems you anchor now are in your broader network. Spend time with your folks. Show up for your peeps. A solid hub of connections can act like an insurance policy, supporting and carrying you through for the long haul. Your group can be composed of people who keep you inspired, build your confidence, and catch you when you fall. Invest your compassion here.
