Theme: An Emotional Reckoning

On July 5, we have an emotional new moon in Cancer that will mark the halfway point in the story unfolding between the Capricorn full moons.

This is a time of deep introspection as we reflect on wounds that were triggered a few weeks ago and make decisions about what we want to do next.

The question of the moment seems to be, “Should I stay or should I go?” as we contemplate whether something on our heart is worth the effort and sacrifice.

New moons represent the beginning of the lunar cycle and inherently contain seeds of potential. As the moon wanes and grows darker, you may feel more tired, irritable, and unmotivated.

The days leading up to the new moon are a time to go inward, process what has transpired over the last month, and prepare to take action.

In this case, we are reflecting on what must change or be left behind to continue the journey we started back in January.

Many of us started the year attempting to build something on shaky foundations or chase our dreams from a place of chaos, and those structures have now crumbled.

It may have seemed like all was lost, but we needed to become aware of these weaknesses and cracks so that we could heal and rebuild from a stronger, more secure place.

The disappointment of the last few months is now the primary source of resistance standing between you and what you want.

Many of us were confronted by our worst fears in the aftermath of eclipse season. Now, you must decide whether to apply what you’ve learned and try again or settle for the status quo.

We have ultimately reached a point of emotional reckoning where our old ways of being will no longer move us forward—this is because our belief systems up until now have been based on wounds from the past, not who we are or want to become.

We are experiencing tension and anxiety because we are fighting to escape our old lives while simultaneously trying to take shelter in their safety and familiarity.

Because this new moon will be in a loose conjunction with Venus, which is squaring Chiron, there may be a sense of overwhelm or helplessness when it comes to addressing long-standing emotional issues.

You may worry you don’t have the strength to overcome the fears holding you back, and it may seem easier to stick with what you know.

With three planets in Cancer, much of the focus is on fears of abandonment, rejection, and disappointment. Even if we have worked hard to cultivate a sense of independence and inner security through our external accomplishments, we can still struggle to feel worthy on an unconscious level.

Our belief that things won’t work out has prevented many of us from trusting and fully committing, but we are realizing that we cannot have what we want unless we are willing to release our preconceived notions and go all in.

Guilt is another emotion that may also be weighing on us as we contemplate change. Everyone is called to grow and given opportunities to pursue their soul’s path, but many spend their entire lives resisting the call.

Witnessing others change can be deeply uncomfortable as it reminds people of what they try hardest to ignore. When you are levelling up, some people will want you to stay the same because your growth pressures them to change or threatens their stability in some way.

One of the greatest costs of following your path is the inevitable loss of previous relationships, and this alone can keep many of us stuck for years.

This new moon is heavy, and it is asking a lot of us. Because it is squaring the North and South nodes, decisions made now have a fated quality—you can either go back or forward, but you can’t stay here.

The most important thing at stake is your foundation—are you constructing something new based on what you have learned and who you want to become, or are you still attempting to salvage or justify a crumbling structure from the past?

The word reckoning ultimately means a settling or summing up of accounts. This new moon invites us to review what we are holding onto and why.

It is a time to take stock of what isn’t working anymore and evaluate how our wounds and beliefs might be causing us to manifest our fears.

Once we understand how we contributed to the events that unfolded in the first half of the year, we can make different choices that take us closer to what we want.

Are you ready to try one more time?

Self Reflection Questions:

In what way were your worst fears confirmed since the start of the year?

If you could go back and do the last six months over again, what would you do differently?

If you woke up tomorrow and this problem was solved, what’s the first thing you would notice?

Who this New Moon will impact the most:

Cancer sun, moon, and rising

Capricorn sun, moon, and rising

Libra sun, moon, and rising

Ritual: Write a Letter from Your Future Self

When we’re navigating difficult seasons, it can be challenging to imagine a future in which our current problems are solved, and we’ve achieved what we set out to do. In these moments, it can be helpful to imagine a time in the past when you felt equally as defeated, reflect on how you persevered, and remember that things eventually worked out. Imagine visiting your past self. What would you say to them? How might you reassure them from your current vantage point?

In the same way, we can write a letter from our future selves providing encouragement and reassurance. Imagine yourself in five or ten years’ time, living in the reality you’re striving toward now. What does your life look like? What did you have to do to get there? Write in the present tense as if everything you want most has come to fruition, and be as specific as possible. Date and sign the letter, then keep it in a safe place to reread whenever you feel discouraged.
