Mercury is stationing retrograde in Aries, ushering in a three-week period of deep reflection, redirection, and recalibration.

As Mercury journeys backward from March 14/15 (PT/ET)  until April 7, 2025, it is asking us to slow down, reassess our path, and rewrite the narratives that have been driving our choices.

While Retrogrades, and Mercury Retrograde in particular, tend to have a shadowy reputation, Retrogrades are not something to fear. They are cosmic invitations to pause and realign, allowing us to revisit the places where we’ve been moving too fast on autopilot, and to give us time to change our course before stepping forward again.

Aries is an archetype that represents courage, independence, and bold action. With Mercury retrograding through Aries, we are being asked to rethink how we advocate for ourselves and the method in which we pursue our desires.

This period is not just about speaking our truth, it’s about refining it, finding clarity in our convictions, and making sure the words we speak, and the actions we take are in alignment with who we truly are.

What makes this Mercury Retrograde particularly potent is that it conjuncts Venus retrograde in Aries and, at the time it turns Retrograde, it opposes the Moon which has now made its way to Libra. This alignment stirs deep themes of love, relationships, and self-worth, challenging us to examine how we express our needs and desires in connection with others.

Mercury retrograde in Aries, conjunct Venus retrograde, and opposing the Moon in Libra is not just about revisiting the past, it’s about reclaiming our voice, redefining love, and realigning with our truth.

Aries reminds us that we are the leaders of our own lives, and that we do not need permission to speak, act, or desire what is meant for us.

This retrograde is a journey of courage and clarity; presenting an opportunity to refine our words, reconnect with our desires, and step into a version of ourselves that communicates with clarity, loves wholly, and leads with intention.

It’s not about rushing ahead. It’s about learning to listen to ourselves, to the wisdom unfolding, and to the truths we are finally ready to claim…

Themes to Consider:

Speaking with Intention & Integrity:

Mercury in Aries is bold, direct, and unfiltered, and when in retrograde it asks us to refine that directness. This is a time to observe where our words may have been impulsive and where we may have spoken from frustration rather than clarity. This is a time to consider where we’ve held back from asserting our truth out of fear of conflict. We must take ownership over the times we have succumbed to over-explaining, defending, or justifying ourselves, without taking into consideration the heartfelt expression of our loved ones. At the same time, we must acknowledge where we have refrained from expressing ourselves and stayed silent out of the fear of speaking up. This retrograde teaches us that speakingour truth doesn’t always mean speaking first. It means speaking with intention, courage, and self-trust.

Rewriting Love & Deeply Knowing Worth:

When both Venus and Mercury retrograde align in Aries, the energy shifts from simple reflection to a profound reworking of how we love, how we communicate in relationships, and how we hold ourselves in our own worth. Aries archetypally represents the raw essence of selfhood, the “I am” before the “we are.” When Venus stations retrograde through Aries, the cosmos calls for an unfiltered reckoning with the Self as it pertains to love, romance, and relationships. This is not a transit for passive longing or external validation; it’s a radical return to self, one that asks us to consider how we seek and define our worth through our relationships versus claiming our worth and allowing our relationships to reflect it.  The fire of Aries is here to strengthen our sovereignty, commitment, and courage in love.

This transit may bring up old relationship wounds, past lovers resurfacing, or moments where we are tested to stand firm in our self-worth. If conversations from the past reappear, then consider:

  • Am I expressing my needs clearly and unapologetically?
  • Am I making choices from a place of self-worth, over self-doubt?
  • Where do I need to reclaim my autonomy and independence in love?

This retrograde isn’t asking us to suppress our desires, it is asking us to refine and claim them.

The Balance Between “Me” and “We”:

With Mercury and Venus both retrograde in Aries, our independent voice is being called forward, and with the Moon in Libra opposing this transit, we are reminded that our relationships are the mirror that reflects our deepest work. Where Libra favours balance, harmony, and fairness, Aries prioritizes sovereignty and action. This opposition creates tension between our individual desires and the dynamics of partnership. This is a precious time to observe the patterns that are surfacing for us around these archetypal themes. Are we speaking up in ways that honour our authentic truth, or are we choosing to sacrifice parts of ourselves to keep the peace? We must be willing to find the balance without our habit of self-betraying.

Advice to Navigate the Retrograding Waters

  • Slow Down & Reassess: Aries energy loves to charge forward, but Mercury retrograde asks us to pause before making big decisions.
  • Consider Your Words Before Speaking: Impulsivity is strong under this transit. If emotions run high, wait before responding. Let clarity settle before expressing something out of integrity.
  • Revisit Old Conversations with a New Perspective: If a past conflict resurfaces, it’s not necessarily a sign to re-engage, it’s a chance to see the evolution of growth and the potential for closure.
  • Reconnect with Authentic Desire: This is a wonderful time to journal, reflect, and get clear on our truest vision for the future.
  • Tune into Self and Act from Truth: When we hide our truth away, we may be encouraged to reclaim our voice. When we act with eruption or reactivity, here we are challenged to practice patience and precision.
  • Release Old Relationship Narratives: With Venus retrograde conjuncting Mercury Retrograde, this is a potent time for us to let go of outdated stories around love and self-worth. The way we allow ourselves to see ourselves in relationships is evolving

Who Will Feel This Mercury & Venus Retrograde in Aries the Most?

Major placements (Sun, Moon, Rising, or personal planets) in the following signs are likely to feel this retrograde deeply, particularly in the areas of relationships, communication, and sense of self.

  • Aries (Sun, Moon, Rising, Venus, Mercury) ~ For Aries, this period challenges  a reclamation of autonomy, confidence, and clarity in self-expression. Past relationship patterns may resurface for closure or reassessment. This is a rebirth in how to advocate for both future vision and present self.
  • Libra (Sun, Moon, Rising, Venus, Mercury) ~ This retrograde may challenge Librans to communicate needs clearly and hold stronger boundaries. A major rebalancing is happening in how to relate to others.
  • Capricorn &  Cancer (Sun, Moon, Rising) ~ Capricorn and Cancer form a square to Aries, which may invite this retrograde to surface growing pains, and also opportunities for deep transformation.
  • Gemini & Virgo (Sun, Moon, Rising, Mercury) ~ Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, meaning that the movement of Mercury may feel energizing. In Aries it brings a fiery, direct approach that may feel unfamiliar. Especially where precision and perfection is favoured.
  • Those Born with Mercury Retrograde in Their Chart ~  If born with Mercury Retrograde in your natal chart, this transit will likely feel more natural to you than it does for others. Instead of experiencing the typical delays, miscommunications, or frustrations that are often associated with Mercury Retrograde, natal Mercury Retrograde people may actually feel a greater sense of clarity and alignment during this time. Since this Mercury Retrograde is happening in Aries, there may be a pull to break free from overthinking or self-doubt. This is an activation point to learn to share your voice, express your thoughts, and claim your truth. Often, natal retrogrades experience luck and auspiciousness during their natal retrograde planet periods.
