Theme: Connecting with our Inner Father Archetype

By Andrea Dupuis

This week we have a lovely New Moon in the sign of Sagittarius, clearing away a lot of the heaviness of the past couple months. The challenges of the eclipses will start to be put behind us as we head into a more positive and feel good season.

Jupiter is the natural ruler of Sagittarius and stations direct on November 23rd. This is quite beautiful for our joy, optimism and excitement about life and our future. It’s been retrograde since early September. It can now operate at its full bright potential. The forward direction will be most impactful for those with Sagittarius and Pisces Sun, Moon and Rising, so if you’ve felt stuck the past couple of months, your planet is moving forward. Yay!

The New Moon is also in a good aspect to Jupiter and Neptune – which gives us a boost from both these planets. Jupiter for its lightness and Neptune for its connection to unconditional and divine love. We may have a more relaxed and joyful demeanour this week.

Symbolically, the planet Jupiter itself represents the father archetype. In Roman mythology the God Jupiter was also known as the ‘shining father’ (aka Zeus in Greek mythology).

Themes related to father will be at the forefront of our minds and hearts right now. The theme of father can be related to your biological father, yes, but it goes much deeper.

There’s the Divine Father in the cosmic sense, there’s your own internal father within, and father energy in the world (sometimes it shows up in who we choose as a partner).

We all have the Divine Mother and Father energies within us and around us. We call the earth ‘mother earth’ and the sky ‘father sky’. They can also be seen as the Mother and Father Archetypes which are not gender specific.

These two energies impact us on a conscious and unconscious level.

We often inherit our deep belief systems from our father figure, or from father energies like the government, the church, our religion…

This New Moon is a potent time to look at our own relationship and beliefs related to ‘father’ and set new intentions around how we want to father ourselves or be in relationship with our father.

We can especially look within at our own inner father and take a close look at that relationship. How can we better father ourselves? Not only how do we nurture ourselves (our inner mother) but what gifts does our inner father bring to our life? What wisdom is there for us to garner?

While we often focus on connecting with our inner mother and nurturing ourselves deeper, it’s vital we also connect with the inner father.

The inner father archetype provides powerful wisdom, insight, logic and advice. We can lean on this archetype when we feel lost, unable to make decisions, confused about life and in need of support.

The New Moon here in Sagittarius will also bring with it a boost of good luck, opportunities to travel, a sense of joy and creativity.

In ancient astrology a New Moon also called a Dark Moon symbolises the start of a new lunar month and therefore symbolises new beginnings. It’s when the Masculine principle – the Sun merges with the Feminine principle – the Moon. We can see it as the two of them hiding away together all cozied up.

If we’re not paying attention the New Moon can slip right by us without notice. It may not seem like a large cosmic event, yet we can work with the Dark Moon energy to set our goals and intentions for the next cycle.

The ancients saw the New Moon as an auspicious time to ‘plant seeds’ and set intentions for the next 28 day lunar cycle. In bio-dynamic (moon based) farming they plant on the New Moon or on the days following.

A New Moon is not a time to take action but a time to go inward and into deep contemplation. In Vedic astrology they say not to take any action until the moon is visible again 2-3 days after the New Moon.

New Moon in Sagittarius Intention Setting Ritual

  1. Cleanse and purify your space by burning rosemary, bayleaf, cedar, sage or any herbs related to your heritage.
  2. Sit quietly in meditation for 10-15mins, or do the Rising Woman Inner Child Meditation (download available in the RW bio).
  3. Ask yourself the New Moon contemplations or simply “What intentions do I have for this lunar cycle (30 days)?”
  4. Write down images, ideas and clarity that comes through.
  5. Pull tarot or oracle cards asking “What can help me achieve these intentions?”
  6. Close your ritual space with prayer, gratitude, whatever has you feel complete.
  7. Note – don’t take actions on your intentions until the Moon is visible again 2-3 days after the New Moon.
